How Much Do Movers Cost in San Diego?

The Short Answer
Local movers in San Diego cost $120 per hour for a crew and truck. A one-bedroom apartment typically takes 3 to 4 hours and costs $360 to $480. A two-bedroom home takes 5 to 7 hours and costs $600 to $840. A three-bedroom house takes 7 to 9 hours and costs $840 to $1,080.
If you have your own truck, labor-only help starts at $50 per hour per mover. Loading a POD or container starts at $380.

What Your Move Will Probably Cost
Based on typical San Diego jobs with reasonable access at both ends.
Studio or 1 Bedroom
3 to 4 hours. Ground floor to ground floor sits at the low end. A third-floor walk-up sits at the high end.
2 Bedroom
5 to 7 hours. The most common job we do, and the one where access makes the biggest difference.
3 Bedroom House
7 to 9 hours, usually a full day. Worth booking a weekday if you can.
4+ Bedroom
Larger homes need a walkthrough or a detailed inventory before we can give you a number worth trusting.
Four Things That Actually Change Your Price
Access, not distance
People assume mileage drives the cost. Within San Diego County it rarely does. What drives it is stairs, elevator waits, and how far the truck has to park from your door. A ground-floor move across town is cheaper than a third-floor move four blocks away.
How packed you are when we arrive
The single biggest cost you control. A crew that has to wait while you finish the kitchen is a crew you are paying to stand still. If everything is boxed, labeled, and off the floor before we walk in, you will land at the low end of every range on this page.
When you move
Mid-week and mid-month is cheaper and gets you better crew availability than the last weekend of the month, when every mover in the county is booked. May through September is peak season in San Diego.
Specialty items
Pianos, slate pool tables, safes, and hot tubs are quoted separately from $280 because they need different equipment and a different technique. Tell us up front. Finding out on the day is how moves run long.

There are no fuel surcharges, no stair fees, and no weekend premium. If it is not in the quote, you are not paying it.
Why the Cheapest Hourly Rate Is Usually the Most Expensive Move
You will find San Diego movers advertising $49 or $59 an hour. That number is real, and it is also not what you will pay. Here is where the difference shows up.

We quote flat. You approve a number before we start, and that is the number you pay. Compare final quotes, not headline rates.
Five Ways to Spend Less on Your Move
Move mid-week and mid-month. The last Saturday of the month is the most expensive slot in San Diego. A Tuesday on the 12th is the cheapest.
Be completely packed before we arrive. This is the biggest lever you control, and it is worth more than any discount you will negotiate.
Get rid of things first. You are paying to move volume. Everything you donate before moving day is money you do not spend.
Book labor-only if you have a truck. At $50 per hour per mover, hiring the muscle and driving yourself is significantly cheaper.
Reserve the elevator in advance. If you are in a building that requires it, an unbooked elevator can cost an hour of crew time on the day.

A two-bedroom move in San Diego typically costs $600 to $840. That is 5 to 7 hours at $120 per hour with crew and truck included. Ground-floor units with close parking land at the low end. Walk-ups and long carries land at the high end.
Being fully packed before the crew arrives is the single biggest thing that keeps you at the lower end of that range.
There are cheaper hourly rates than ours advertised in San Diego, some as low as $49 per hour. Those rates are real, but they usually exclude fuel surcharges, travel time, stair fees, and wrapping materials, which get added at the end.
The honest way to compare is to get a written flat quote from two or three companies and compare the final numbers. If a company will not put a flat number in writing, that tells you something.
Both models exist, and we use flat rate. We quote you a fixed price based on your inventory and access before the job starts, and that is what you pay regardless of how long it takes us.
The hourly figures we publish are how we build that quote, not a meter running against you on the day. If the job takes longer than we estimated, that is our problem to absorb.
Tipping is never expected and always appreciated. As a rough guide, most people tip $20 to $40 per mover for a half-day job and $40 to $60 per mover for a full day, or around 10 to 15 percent of the total.
If the crew handled something genuinely difficult, a fourth-floor walk-up in August or a piano down a narrow staircase, that is usually when people go higher.
We take a $30 deposit to hold your date and crew, and it comes off your final bill. Nothing else is charged until the job is finished and you have walked through.
The deposit is small on purpose. It is enough to confirm the booking is real, and not enough to hurt if your plans change. Cancel or reschedule with no fee up to 48 hours before.
